Heather really wants an iPod Touch for her 30th birthday coming up on August 19th. She hinted at this in twitter and more than one person offered to contribute to the fund. So, I put together this little donation widget for people to help out. Don't feel obligated if you don't want to, but if you'd like to help put a smile on Heather's face for her 30th birthday, I wanted to give you the opportunity.
If you do donate, please leave a comment to this post so that we know who's helping out and so that we can thank you on our podcast.
Thanks!
Sorry it's been so long since we recorded a show, but don't give up on us. We'll be back soon with more episodes of A Geek and His Wife...
Recently my younger sister, Holly, and her best friend, Megan, moved to Arizona State University to start their college careers. To make things a little more fun for them, I am creating Project Postcard! I want to collect as many postcards as I can from around the country, or even the world, to mail to the 2 girls throughout their freshman year in college. It doesn't matter if you live down the street or down under. I want personalized postcards from your area or town.
How Project Postcard Works:
Just pick up 2, 4 or even 6 postcards and write a short greeting, inspirational message, or funny saying on each post card. Feel free to sign it, or leave it anonymous. Then, put all the postcards in an envelope, mail them to me, and I will periodically mail the postcards to the girls to keep them smiling and laughing throughout their freshman year at ASU.
For additional information or to participate in Project Postcard, please go to the Contact Information tab on the left and fill out the e-mail form. I will gladly answer any questions and provide you with the address to mail the postcards to.
Thank You,
Heather
A Geek and His Wife is coming up on its one-year anniversary and I'm sick of our intro music. I really want to mix it up, but instead of putting something lame together myself I thought that I'd create a contest for the listeners. A $30 Amazon Gift Card is on the line for the best introduction we receive. Feel free to compose some music for us, use samples from our previous podcasts, or create your own voiceover. Once you have something you'd like to submit, send us an email with the subject: "Intro Contest." Feel free to enter multiple times, but there can be only one winner. In addition to the $30, we will also interview you on the show (we won't force you if you'd rather not be on the show). Our e-mail address can be found on the contact page.
I just wanted to update everyone. It turns out that I was unable to have surgery today due to my illness. Since it wasn't an emergency, they wanted to hold off until I was well. They don't want to risk any complication, and I quite agree. I was really hoping to have it done and over with, but it's not worth the risk. Besides, they said they can get me in within the next 2 weeks anyway. The surgeon's office is currently coordinating it with the surgical center, and as soon as it's all arranged they'll call me and tell me when to be there. I'll keep you all posted. In the mean time, feel free to join our forums (if you haven't already) and leave me well wishes. Talk at you later.
Heather
First off, I want to say how grateful I am to our regular listeners. You have offered up some great advice and very amusing voice mails and e-mails. By listening to our show, you've made us more that just a geek talking to his wife, you've made us podcasters.
Here's the disappointing news... We are no longer going to be recording every week. We are going to be recording every other week instead. This was not a joint decision. This was a decision made by me, and Kevin is very disappointed. In my defense, I have to say I'm a little disappointed myself. If you can remember back to our first episode, the main reason we wanted to start a podcast was to keep out of town family and friends up to date on what's going on with us. Well, that hasn't actually worked out like we thought. We have a few family members that listen every week, but the people we were really hoping to reach, the ones we don't talk to on a regular basis, just don't listen. I took for granted how my iPod made listening to podcasts so easy, and didn't take in to account how difficult it would be for the friends and family member who don't have one. It's one thing to listen while you're working out or while you're driving to and from work, but to expect them to sit down at their computers and do nothing but listen to us chatter on for an hour is a lot to ask. So, while it isn't exactly their fault, I'm still disappointed they're not listening.
Another reason I've come to this decision is because of the amount of time and effort it takes to produce 1 show. It started out extremely exciting and full of hope. I didn't mind sitting at my computer for hours putting together my show notes. I honestly thought that the more I did it the more effortless it would become. I was hoping that I would eventually be able to do away with bulleted lists and be able to wing it and have it come out effortless. Now that I've been doing it for a while, I don't see myself being able to pull that off, so I'll just leave that to Dawn and Drew.
So with all of the regular segments, having to dig up stuff from my boring, stay at home, life to talk about, and now having to take the dogs to and from my mom's house for the hour, it's just gotten to be too much for the few family members and listeners that we have. I am so grateful for you all though, and I want to assure you that we are not going to pod-fade. In fact, Kevin and I are in the process of trying to come to a compromise. We're thinking of recording a short show on the in between weeks with no segments and short enough that we don't have to take the dogs to my mom's house. We're still in the preliminary stages of negotiation though, so don't hold your breath. We'll keep you updated with announcements on our website, and feel free to call us at 206-203-5613 with comments or concerns.

I received an e-mail from libsyn (the company that hosts our podcasts) saying the following:
On thursday, 8/23 at approx 2:30pm EST there as a misconfiguration of DNS records sent out to the registrar which holds libsyn.com. This mistake quickly propagated around the internet in a matter of minutes, and despite our rapid response to correct the problem, there was a window where name servers around the globe stored and is currently saving the incorrect information. Initially we felt we had caught the error in time and that the effects would be minimal. We posted to the normal channels- support.libsyn.com about the issue. Several hours later, as we started to see reports of the outage (as users couldn't email us, cause the domain name was not resolving) we jumped back into the DNS issue and got on the phone w/ our registrar to see what they could do. Our registrar could not offer any solution to the problem other then waiting for servers around the world to correct themselves. They estimated it would take 24 hours or less. We are now approaching 48 hours and a portion of our users, and our users audience are still unable to resolve any .libsyn.com domains.
Now, I haven't had any troubles accessing our shows, but that doesn't mean that others of you are not. Please let me know by sending me an e-mail if you cannot download our show and I will provide an alternative link. I've been happy with libsyn up to now, so hopefully this doesn't happen again. I wish they would have provided more information as to how this situation began, though.
Anyway, keep on keeping on. Heather and I have already recorded a show today, and I'll be posting it up later tonight.
I've added links to Heather's and my photo sets on Flickr. I don't have a pro account, so Heather has much more photos than me... What do you think,Heather? Should I get a pro account? ;-)
Also, don't forget about our forums link over there. Go on, join our forums, you know you want to...
Hey guys. Just a quick heads up that we're planning on recording another show any day now. It's been two weeks since the last show, and as such we have plenty to talk about. We're shooting for recording either tonight or tomorrow night. It depends on how our schedules work out... Thanks for being patient :-)
Hey everyone, it's been crazy around here! Kevin just arrived home last night from his business trip to Long Beach, CA. Then early Sunday morning, the two of us pick up and go to Colorado for a week. So in these 2 days we're home together, we're hoping to squeeze in another show (Hopefully this evening because Kevin's going to be SUPER busy tomorrow). So sit tight and check back tomorrow for another fun filled episode of A Geek and his Wife. As always, you can call in to 206-203-5613 and leave us a voicemail asking a question or making a comment. - Heather
I just wanted to let everyone know that we are still planning on making our second show any day now. Heather's family is still in town, and visiting with them has been consuming all of our free time. We should hopefully have time Wednesday or Thursday night to record a show, though. So please hold tight, and we'll get you that next excellent episode of A Geek and His Wife. As a reminder, you can call in to 206-203-5613 and leave us a voicemail asking a question or making a comment. - Kevin
Dylan T. Lovan, Associated Press:
"PETERSBURG, Ky. - Like most natural history museums, this one has exhibits showing dinosaurs roaming the earth. Except here, the giant reptiles share the forest with Adam and Eve. That, of course, is contradicted by science, but that's the point of the $25 million Creation Museum rising fast in rural Kentucky. Its inspiration is the Bible - the literal interpretation that contends God created the heavens and the earth and everything in them just a few thousand years ago."
